Takara Tony Mk 85 Nano Weapon Set A Upgrade Kit

Takara Tony Nano Weapon Set A

One of my most popular articles on the site remains my Takara Tony Thanos Upgrade article. One has to assume you’d be at least as interested in another Tony article. The Thanos kit was a necessity. The rush to market, based on concept art, made it a frustrating figure.

The Nano Weapon Set A? Well now, that’s just icing on the cake.

To begin, if you’ve never ordered from Tony before, I implore you to read the article I linked above, as it details his process. There is also a link to his Facebook page, but I’ll toss it here because I’m cool like that.

I loved the MK 85 armor. It was a real world (as it were) version of the comic armor, with the gold arms. I could have been totally happy with just that Figuarts figure.

But I saw the Nano Weapon Set A and Set B and realized I had to get one of them.

Why not both?

Because I’m not made of money.

Dang, you’re nosey.

Regardless, the Nano Weapon Set A seemed to have cooler looking, and more, gadgets than B. If you picked up B and didn’t get A, I imagine you’d be pretty annoyed that the rack for the side plasma cannons come with A. Not sure why that was a thing, but it was.

What do you get in the Nano Weapon Set A?

Look, I can’t even pretend to know the “official names” of these things, so we are going to go with my best guess.

You get a Nano Back Canon that mounts into a hole on his back, concealed by a tiny piece of easy to lose armor. I honestly didn’t even realize mine had that hole.

You get two Nano Blades, one for each hand, and it comes with the hands.

You get a big Nano shield.

You get a much more screen accurate forearm.

However, the big ticket item for me are the three different Nano Gauntlet hands.

We get a neutral Nano Gauntlet hand.

We get a closed fist Nano Gauntlet hand.

Finally, we get the Snapping Nano Gauntlet hand.

What doesn’t work with the Nano Weapon Set A?

These are minor gripes. I get it. Tony does absolutely insane work.

The few things I can find any fault with are a preference thing. I don’t understand why I paid for and now own, a part to another pack that I doubt I’ll ever be able to purchase.

I would rather have seen those resources used for another forearm for the left arm. However, here’s the rub… Tony makes these pieces look so nice, you forget they are resin. The peg on the end of my much superior forearm snapped off, and it now resides in a Figuarts Iron Hand. I bought a tiny drill pack, so I can probably salvage the hand, but that peg is gone now. I wish I could buy just a set of forearms. Or at least another right forearm so my OCD brain doesn’t meltdown when I think about it.

I’ve also seen the design isn’t exactly movie accurate, but its better than what Bandai gave us.

What works with the Nano Weapon Set A?

Literally everything else. The Nano Weapon Set A just reeks of quality craftsmanship. I forgot to mention (did I forget, or retain it for a big reveal later? hmmmm), almost every piece shines in an area when you hit it with a black light. I didn’t own one, so I picked up a cheap one on Amazon.

I didn’t own one because I have no desire to know about, or see, bodily fluid in my house. We have a 12-year-old and a 14-year-old living here, so… yikes.

Having the hands that hold the blades attached to the blades was such a good idea. I HATE trying to fit intricate things into action figure hands (like any Figuarts Cap shield).

Regardless, I have never owned anything before with this gimmick, so I was not prepared for how much it shined.

In the pictures below, all of the shine on the NANO parts are from the Blacklight. When I could, I posted the picture with just the blacklight, no photoshop for reference. All I did was make a mask layer in photoshop and allowed the black-lit stuff to shine through. I didn’t brighten it at all. The only downside is if you want to see the light in real life, you’re also going to see the purple from the black light. But that’s why Zeus invented Photoshop.

However, don’t let needing the black light stop you. If you have a chance to pick up a set, I think you’ll like it. It looks wonderful as is, no fancy lights.
