I’m not sure I can call this a review about the Mei Kai Studios Superman custom headsculpt an actual review. There isn’t a lot to review. It comes down to, “am I interested in purchasing custom pieces for my figures?” If you’re like me, the answer to that question is, “Sometimes.”
For my Mezcos? It is a resounding yes. Please don’t misunderstand me, I really like almost all of my Mezco head sculpts. However, Tony Mei and the people over at Mei Kai Studios along with painter extraordinaire, Rick Jasso, are “extra” in a good way. You can tell they love comics and this is a passion for them. It’s always nice to meet kindred spirits.
Movie head sculpts are great. They have the ability to be definitively right, or definitively wrong. It either looks like the actor, or it doesn’t. Comic based heads, not so much.
Sure, it could be Superman, but whose Superman are we interpreting? Swan’s? Byrne’s? Jurgens’? Johns’? Porter’s? Miller’s? Frank’s? Perez’s? See what I’m getting at? I don’t know which was the inspiration for this sculpt, but to me it’s very reminiscent of Lee’s work in Batman Hush. Again, just my opinion, but that’s the vibe I get. How about you?
I got off the path again, didn’t I? Bad Darian.
Yesterday I reviewed the Mezco Classic Superman and I told you that you’d see the Mei Kai Studios head soon, but I bet you didn’t think it would be the next day. No big deal. I’m just awesome. Let’s take a look.

Finally, here is his spot in the display as of this writing. That could always change on any given day.
It’s a nice sculpt – looks weirdly like Oscar Isaac to me, who I can actually see as Supes – but it seems like the neck is too long now. Did you seat it that way deliberately, or…? I guess you have no issue with it. 😀
It’s probably because I’m always afraid to apply too much pressure. 44 years of consistently bad luck has taught me that it greatly increases the chances of one of two things happening. I snap the peg in the neck/head OR it shoots out of my fingers and disappears forever. My basement eats things.
