Figuarts Clone Trooper Phase II Vs Clone Captain Rex

Figuarts Clone Trooper Phase II Vs Clone Captain Rex

Godzilla Vs. Mothra. Ali Vs Frazier. Figuarts Clone Trooper Phase II Vs Clone Captain Rex. Battles for the ages, all of them. Sometimes when I do Versus pieces, the reason is obvious. For instance, this one or this one. However, this particular article, Figuarts Clone Trooper Phase II Vs Clone Captain Rex, isn’t quite as obvious. Some may even say “It’s not fair to judge a Black Series against a Figuarts.” To those people, I say thee nay. Thee nay.

The Clone Trooper and Rex were reviewed on their own. The Phase II clone is at its oldest, a 2nd or 3rd quarter of 2017 release. There haven’t been any major action figure developments since then.

For Figuarts.

For the Black Series? They do face printing now.  So there’s that.

The Captain Rex figure comes with a helmet and two blasters. Alternatively, the Figuarts figure comes with 4 sets of hands and two weapons.

Figuarts Clone Trooper Phase II Vs Clone Captain Rex articulation

As I mentioned in my Clone Trooper review, the articulation was a trigger for me. Very little head or ankle pivot and the double jointed elbows is wasted on the figure thanks to the armor.

Conversely, the Black Series Rex excels at something one would think would be easy: it stays out of its own way.

This is going to depend on your preference. Do you want your clone right off the assembly line? Or battered by constant war with separatists? The Clone Trooper has a nice, clean white finish for it.

One of the reasons I started making models when I was younger as opposed to just buying Star Trek spaceships was because I loved how realistic you could make them. I became fascinated with rinses, dry brushing, pre-shading, creating rust and grime, etc. I’m not a master or anything but I can grasp the basics. I did a write up on a Bandai General Grievous model I made. I like weathering and I won’t apologize for it.

Winner: Black Series

Figuarts Clone Trooper Phase II Vs Clone Captain Rex sculpts

The Clone Trooper has a helmet. That helmet looks very nice to me. I say that with the caveat that I am not a guy who will take out reference pics and compare them to my action figures. To me, it is a solid representation of a Clone Trooper helmet. That is pretty much it. The armor looks nice with clean lines throughout the mold.

Alternatively, the Black Series Rex comes in strong with a really nice, printed sculpt of actor Temuera Morrison (who looks old to me now. In my head everyone is the exact age they were when I last saw them on film. I can assure you, I look old now as well). Furthermore, the head is small enough that he actually looks like a human in full body armor. The helmet sculpt is nice as well, but this is such a no-brainer for an alternative head that I am not sure how Bandai missed this opportunity. Think about it. One mold/print with different hair colors, the occasional scar, and all of a sudden you have, for the price of one, an alternative head sculpt for every single Clone Trooper (Phase I and II), Jango Fett and Boba Fett.

I guess if they get around to releasing a Boba Fett figure, maybe they will make the head so it can be used with other Clones and such. Right, just like the 12 inch X-Wing suit showed up for my Luke Skywalker when I was 6,

For me, the clear winner here is the Black Series Clone Captain Rex. At the end of the day, I do these for fun. Get both or neither if you want. if I could only have one, it would be Rex. You can pick the figures up here:
