I’m a pretty easy guy to shop for. I keep an updated Amazon Wishlist for friends and relatives, with items ranging from a few dollars to a couple hundred. I never expect anyone to buy me anything, and in fact, I keep the list just to keep track of stuff I want when I get paid.
However, there is one present that I am always interested in, and thanks to my girlfriend, I usually get.
Every Father’s Day and birthday, I ask for a new display case. This Father’s Day was no different and I received my third Ikea Billy. This time… it would be a Star Wars Display.
For the most part, my Star Wars figures have been broken up into various cubes in my Detolfs. However, I wanted to get my SW figures out of the Detolfs so I can go to a more comic centric display in them, and because I feel like Star Wars is important enough to me to warrant a display of its own.
My grand idea was a shelf of Prequel good guys, then PQ Bad guys, OT good guys, then OT bad guys, etc. It all sounded great on paper. It turns out, I have a lot more Star Wars figures than I realized.
The only issue I have with the Billy case are the doors. Glass doors are a must for me. I need to be able to see my collection, and I need to do what I can to keep the dust off of them. The glass doors for the Billy have a wood strip that runs down the middle of the display when the doors are closed. So anything placed in the middle of the shelf can only be seen when the door is open.
The next issue I ran into was again, me underestimating the number of figures I had. I wanted the shelves to be in somewhat chronological order. That’s why the Phase 1 Clones are before the Phase II clones and why Revan is faaaaaar left on the PQ shelf.
On my OT shelf, I wanted to do the Rogue One, Rebels and Solo good guys as well as the OT crew. It turns out, the ancillary characters could have been their own shelves, so I had to nix that idea. The Rogue One, Solo and Rebels figures remain in the Detolf to my chagrin, as do the Bounty Hunters I wanted to put on my OT Bad Guy shelf.
Both the Empire and First Order shelves looked odd when I put guys not in uniform on them. I finally ended up putting that Space Dildo, Moloch, on the PQ bad guy shelf with Dryden Vos and a Gamorrean Guard. Then my OCD kicked in and I had to move them.
On the OT Good Guy shelf, I ended up putting my Tusken Raider and Jawas. They aren’t “bad guys.” They are just what they are, with no allegiance to either side. Another set of grey characters that needed a home. The Gamorrean Guard ended up on this shelf also.
Regardless, despite my personal nerd hardships in putting this all together, I’d like to think it came out ok. I’ve thought about doing an article on setting up your display, lighting, shelving, etc… I just don’t know if anyone would want to read it. Let me know if you’d enjoy that.
Wrapping it up, here are some phone pics of the Bounty Hunters, Solo characters, Rebels and Rogue One.
