Marvel Legends 80th Big Time Spider Man Review

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE!

The Marvel Legends Big Time Spider Man makes the ninth 80th Anniversary figure I’ve picked up. As I mentioned in my 80th Wolverine Review, I have been really thrilled with every figure from the Anniversary line. Still, I was iffy on preordering this one.

I didn’t read the run with this suit in it. Which makes me kind of sad. Obviously this uniform was big enough for fans that this figure was released. As opposed to, say, a defining 80th Spider Man in the trusted blue and reds like they did with their Cap.

It makes me sad because time continues to march on. There was a point in my life where I was single, my vehicle was paid off, and about $300 a month in disposable income went to comic book collecting. There was no way I’d have not had every single issue of a new run back in the day.

Then I had kids and wives and cars and mortgages and now I have a $9.99 subscription to Marvel Unlimited. It appears I have some reading to do in regards to the Marvel Legends Big Time Spider Man figure. The first thing that struck me as odd was this suit was designed to compensate for Peter’s lack of Spider-Sense. What? That seems sacrilegious to me.

Speaking of sacrilegious, it’s amazing how my mind works. Most things I can make sexually deviant in seconds. However, “Peter-Tingle” never crossed my mind in 46 years. Obviously, Peter Parker is off-limits in terms of penis jokes in my life. Fortunately, this figure is not. It’s not off-limits… it’s not NOT a penis. At the end of the day, isn’t that the best we can hope someone says about us all?

Let’s all tingle our Peters (action figures, perverts) and take a deep dive into the Marvel Legends Big Time Spider Man figure review!

What comes in the Marvel Legends Big Time Spider Man box?

We get the figure, of course, with a distinct lack of Peter Tingle.

We also get three sets of hands.

We get splayed/crawling/neutral hands.

We get thwipping hands.

Rounding out the hands on the Marvel Legends Big Time Spider Man figure, we get spider fists.

The last pack in we get is a spider web.

What doesn’t work with the Marvel Legends Big Time Spider Man figure?

The biggest flaw in the figure is the paint apps, and even that isn’t horrible. You don’t really notice the sloppy green linework until you’re looking at it through a camera lens. However, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

While I am happy that they’ve started giving us web affects for our Spider-people, it’s still a ways off from what it needs to be. The triangle-esque device in which the web is supposed to hang on looks cumbersome. I prefer the webs that attach on the wrist pegs, and even that bothers me when you can see too much of the part behind the peg.

What works with the Marvel Legends Big Time Spider Man figure?

The Marvel Legends Big Time Spider Man figure has a lot going for it. Sure, I griped about the web, but at least we have one.

The big selling point for me was the inclusion of all three necessary handsets for a Spider-Man figure. Spider-man punches people and things, he spins webs, and he climbs walls. If your figure can’t at LEAST do that, then stop wasting my time. We live in the golden age of Spider-Man, and I expect Hasbro and other toy manufacturers to understand our needs. And when I say “our” needs, I mean “my” needs, because I am selfish.

His articulation scheme is pretty fantastic for a domestic release. Plenty of ankle pivot, butterfly shoulders and great neck up/down movement. I can only hope we get an 80th treatment for the classic Spidey outfit. Hopefully with a matte paint finish except for his lens, and some solid line work.

Should you purchase the Marvel Legends Big Time Spider Man figure?

If you’re a fan of this costume, yes. If you’re a Spider-man fan, then yes. If you happen to just collect the 80th Anniversary figures, again, yes.

He looks unique next to other Spider-Man figures without losing with quintessentially makes Spider-Man Spider-man. You can find him here:
