Happy New Year!!
The Mezco Cyclops figure is out. Let us all rejoice. I didn’t necessarily hate Hasbro’s attempt at this figure, but in every way it fell short, the Mezco Cyclops makes up.
The Mezco Cyclops is a bit of fan service to the Jim Lee era of X-books. Love them or hate them, but the look in those books, coupled with the power of the Animated cartoon where he wore the same uniform, has helped cement this look as THE definitive Cyclops look.
Cyclops has been around the Marvel universe for a while and has been a student, a leader, and a villain. He’s fought Thanos and Toad. There’s too much history for me to cover so if you just crawled out from under a rock, here is some 411 on our pal Scott here.
A consummate leader, it’s nice to see Mezco show him some love. Let’s dive in, shall we?
What’s in the Mezco Cyclop Box?
Inside the Mezco Cyclops box, we find quite a bit. We get the Cyclops figure, obviously.
We get two batteries for the light-up feature in his eyes. I had them turned on for the bulk of the pictures.
We get two distinct head sculpts. One is stoic…
While the other seems pretty upset:
We get six hands to swap out. Two of them are mutant fists:
We get some neutral/open hands:
Then we get two one offs. The first one is a flat, saluting hand, or could be used to motion your team forward.
The last one are two fingers, which can be used to “activate” his optic visor, or tell English people to sod off.
He has a smoldering visor display option.
There are two different optic blast effects. One is a more focused, narrow beam.
The second is a much more powerful explosion of optic energy.
He also has this very fancy, and very 90’s era Cyclops tailored jacket.
Finally, he has his display stand and arm, and extra optic visors in case you lose one (which would be easy to do). Here are some more detailed pics for your viewing pleasure.
What doesn’t work with the Mezco Cyclops figure?
This is a great figure if you’re like me and don’t have an issue with “Mez Flair.” I usually do not and this figure is not an exception.
The larger blast effect puts him off balance, so your posing needs to reflect that factor. Also, the battery compartment is a little tedious to deal with. However, you’re probably going to mess with it one or two times max in the life of the figure, I imagine. Other than that… there isn’t a lot to complain about. Which leads me to…
What works with the Mezco Cyclops figure?
The headsculpts are great. His tiny leather jacket is not nearly the pain in the ass I thought it would be. His ankle pivot isn’t as bad as some other Mezcos and every effect piece he has looks stellar. I really believe Mezco is just hitting their stride when we get quality like this to display.
Should you purchase the Mezco Cyclops figure?
If you’re a fan of action figures (and you’re reading this, so it’s safe to assume you do) then this figure deserves a place on your shelf. I believe that like Iron Man and Green Lantern, this will be the Cyclops template going forward. We may see different uniforms, different facial expressions, but I’m willing to bet this is the figure the other ones measure up to before they release them.
