Damn you, Alfred. His purchase was a gateway purchase for the wave. I saw the Multiverse KGBeast figure in Walmart on a payday, and well, it’s pretty easy to guess what happened next. I bought him.
I was always fascinated by the character. A guy that fought Batman to a standstill pretty much when he debuted in 1988? Anatoli Knyazev was involved with a deep-state KGB operation led by a group named Hammer (not related to Norman Osborne’s H.A.M.M.E.R. during the Dark Reign), who trained him and cybernetically enhanced him to be one of the world’s best assassins. He was referred to as “The Beast” in the KGB. American Intel services dubbed him the KGBeast. Here is some info on his back story.
When I saw this bulky, buff badass one-armed man, I knew I needed him on my DC bad guy shelf. Now let’s dive in.
What comes in the Multiverse KGBeast box?
Knives, knives, and more knives. Oh, and the Multiverse KGBeast figure.
The figure has two knives that fit in his boot, and a third, for lack of a better term, bush-whacker knife that can be held in his cybernetic arm gun (what a weird sentence) or in his right hand. You got options, is all I’m saying.
I mean… a canon with a knife just seems gratuitous. Boot knife!
What doesn’t work with the DC Multiverse KGBeast figure?
His articulation isn’t the greatest. Sure, he’s a big bulky guy, but he’s also a trained martial artist. I’d like to be able to get him in some decent fighting positions. He has a lot of throwing stars, but none of them can be used.
It would have been great if they could have found a less conspicuous place to put their trademark.
Although this isn’t a result of anything Mattel did wrong, but can we find a way for knives and other weapons to not come prebent? A few of the pictures look like an erectile dysfunction ad. He has almost no head pivot, and forget about ankle pivot. His arms are single jointed, but if they weren’t, I’d imagine the sheer size of his biceps would prevent them from being used.
What works with the DC Multiverse KGBeast?
This figure is exactly how bulky he should be. He looks terrifying, in a good way. I’m kind of sad it took Mattell until the line ended to put out anything of quality. While it is not the blue and red costume I first met him in, I really like the black and red look here. The DC Multiverse KGBeast figure is an example of what can be done right when someone does their homework.
Should you purchase the DC Multiverse KGBeast figure?
As a DC fan, I think he’s worth the purchase. Particularly since it seems the prices of the now-defunct Multiverse figures are trending downward. Maybe by the time you read this, McFarlane toys will have some solicits out for their DC figures. For now, this is what we got, and I wouldn’t expect another KGBeast figure for a while. The good news is, he looks pretty great next to the latest Mezco Batman. If I found him at retail, you shouldn’t have any issues. If you’re looking to buy online, start here:
