Mezco Batman Sovereign Knight Review

The Mezco Batman Sovereign Knight is the 2nd entry in a series of Batman figures Mezco is producing. The first was the Ascending Knight and was an excellent figure in its own right. I can say that with a year in the rearview between now and its release date. You already know who Batman is and what he does. You probably even know my expectations for a Batman figure. How does this guy compare? Let’s dive in and get started.

What’s in the Mezco Batman Sovereign Knight box?

Justice, my friends. Cold, hard, flying mammal justice. What else? Since you asked, go grab yourself a warm cup of cocoa/coffee, sit down and get ready for the pack ins. No surprise here, but we get a Batman figure.

Included are four (!!!!) different headsculpts. Big eared bats:

Short eared Bats:

There is a battle damaged sculpt:

The final head sculpt is an unmasked Bruce Wayne sculpt, not dissimilar to the one we received in the Ascending Knight release.

We get four sets of hands and one Kryptonite “knuckle duster” (we called them brass knuckles growing up and I knew way too many guys who had them when I was younger). Obviously, we get a set of fists to punch the deranged and underprivileged.

There is a neutral set of hands good for being neutral, or holding the 97 Batarangs that are included with him.

What would Batman be without holding hands? He’s got them.

Master Wayne has a set of trigger pulling hands.

The final hand is the one he would use to bully Kryptonians.

Also included are various pieces of Bat-Paraphernalia. There is an updated grappling hook gun with two grappling hooks. One that sits inside pre-launched, and another with string he can use to, well, grapple things.

Like the last grappling gun, it fits nicely in the back of his belt.

He gets a spanking new “sonic distributor.” I don’t know what that means. Does he use it to listen in on conversations at a distance? Or does it shoot sound waves at enemies with the hope it will disorient them (he’s used sonics in the past on Superman)? Regardless of what it does, it looks amazing.

For throwing at the homeless, he comes with ten tiny Batarangs, and one large one.

The last tool in the Mezco Batman Sovereign Knight figure’s utility belt is something I didn’t know I wanted until I had it, his Bat-Drone.

He comes with the standard Mezco display base and posing arm.

Rounding out the list of pack-ins are these useless cape clips.

What doesn’t work with the Mezco Batman Sovereign Knight?

Much like its older brother, the Ascending Knight, the Mezco Batman Sovereign Knight has very few shortcomings, and most of them come down to personal tastes as opposed to glaring flaws.

At this point, I should be able to autofill this part: Fix your ankle rockers, Mezco. People don’t stand on the sides of their feet.

I will state this every time… put wires in your capes! I hate their current cape posing system so much. It’s at the point it makes me angry to open my box and see them. Hopefully, the aftermarket helps me out with a replacement cape. This figure is too nice to have an inferior cape.

The drone should have had a peg hole in the bottom. There’s really no easy way to photograph him “in the air” with one of the 200 stands I have.

Lastly, I don’t hate the face sculpts. It’s just that almost every face sculpt Mezco releases looks “pissy” to me. They’re not bad, but they also make me think Batman is one meme away from sprinkling salt on people. Fortunately, I’ve already seen replacement heads. Once I grab one, I’ll post it here on the site.

What works with the Mezco Sovereign Knight figure?

What works is the exceptional amount of love that obviously went into making this figure. My favorite Batman head with the Mezco Batman Sovereign Knight figure is the short-eared, almost Jim Lee-esque version. Unfortunately, I LOVE that battle damaged sculpt but he has long ears.

The uniform looks like a logical evolution when seen next to its predecessor. I wouldn’t have minded some black leather shorts.

That was an odd sentence.

All of his gadgets, especially that drone, look incredible. There is an attention to detail that I’m not sure we’ll see from another Batman figure. At least until the next Mezco Batman. Elder Bat? I don’t know, but I’m all in for the next one also.

Should you buy the Mezco Batman Sovereign Knight Figure?

If you follow this blog, you’ll know this is always my hardest section to write. Essentially because I am deciding if other people should spend their money or not. What I can tell you, is this: Since you’re reading this blog, it’s probably safe to assume you enjoy action figures. Maybe I can take it a step further and say you probably enjoy Batman.

If either of those things is true, then yes, you want this figure. It may well be a contender for the quintessential 1:12 Batman figure. Despite any preconceived shortcomings this figure may have for me on a personal level, I’d be a fool to tell you this was not another great Mez Bat offering. If you want him, here are some links to help you get started:

Wrapping this up with a requested picture. My friend Scotty Lee’s son, Jack, loves Batman, Boba Fett, Spider-Man, and pretty much everything I love. I squeezed in a shot of the galaxy’s most famous bounty hunter trying to collect a bounty.
