Star Wars The Black Series Rio Durant Review

Star Wars The Black Series Rio Durant

The Star Wars The Black Series Rio Durant figure is a legitimate statement in the design and implementation of alien action figures. That may sound like hyperbole until you realize that a few years ago, Hasbro couldn’t even make the human characters not look like they just suffered a stroke.

I enjoyed the Solo movie (I think I mentioned that during my Moloch write up) and Rio was one of the reasons why. This charismatic, likable alien managed to gain my affection in the short time he was on screen far faster than three movies of Jar Jar.

This diminutive pilot had to die (I don’t care about spoilers… the movie has been out in stores for months now) to make room for a pilot that could make the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs. However, his time spent with the movie goer made sure we’d feel his loss when he passed.

RIP, you little, beautiful freak.

What’s in the Star Wars The Black Series Rio Durant box?

Like recent Black Series figures, we get some cool stuff. We get the half-pint figure, all four of his arms, a set of removable pilot lenses and two weapons.

What doesn’t work with Star Wars The Black Series Rio Durant?

I really don’t have a lot to complain about with this little guy. I am unable to get his pistol into his holster, but I’ve seen pictures of people who have done it. I can only assume I am just being a big wuss that’s afraid to rip his toy holster. Other than that, I have zero complaints about the Star Wars The Black Series Rio Durant.

I suppose I could say that I enjoy him and L3-37 so much that I may have to get the other figures from the Solo movie, which, outside of the Imperials, I had no intentions of doing.

What works with Star Wars The Black Series Rio Durant?

Right off the bat, his face sculpt/print looks amazing. The blue and yellow of his flight suit just pops, as does the red on his pilot visor.

Star Wars The Black Series Rio Durant
He’s a super freak, super freak. He’s super freaky.

However, the real hard sell here is that this dude has four highly detailed arms that are articulated with a full range of motion. I know this is only a $22 figure, but it needs to stand as an evolutionary leap forward in mass market, domestic lines. They made a figure that had the potential to look goofy (*cough* upcoming 6 armed Spider-Man legend figure *cough*) and instead, it looks like he stepped off of the screen.

Should you buy the Star Wars The Black Series Rio Durant?

If you can find him, and you collect 1:12 Star Wars figures, or just want a cool alien, don’t hesitate if you see him. You can pick him up here if you don’t want to leave your home:
